Hi there! I’m Daniel Stout. Most people call me Dan. If you’ve got a web need, I’ve got a web solution for you.
Tech Distillery is a web consulting and development shop that offers high quality, affordable solutions. We aim to make the web world approachable by distilling technology into an easy-to-understand format. We’re based in the beautiful city of Fitchburg, a suburb of Madison, the Wisconsin state capital.
We build new websites and renovate existing ones. Our focus is on sites running WordPress, which is a flexible and proven platform. In addition to building sites, we provide all manner of consulting and support including:
- Hacked site triage and cleanup
- Plugin and theme installation and configuration
- Overall site optimization
- Website assessment and improvement plans
We work primarily with nonprofits and artisans. Basically, people and organizations that don’t have dedicated web staff are a good fit for our services.
Dan updated and redesigned the website for our small nonprofit. He essentially brought it back to life. Dan was great at helping a staff that had a vision but very little technical knowledge. He provided good ideas and helped us figure out what was manageable for our organization. He was professional, courteous and reliable. I would recommend him without hesitation. [#]

[…] Dan was the first person to be able to diagnose the root issue, resolve the vulnerabilities in my website, and finally make the site secure […] all while doing an excellent job of communicating and working alongside me so I could maintain it after his work was done. He is terrific to work with and I have already recommended him to others, who have been just as impressed as I am with his expertise, communicativeness, and readiness to make things better. I reached out to Dan as I had several questions regarding my two WordPress websites and wanted to make sure they were up to date and setup properly. He promptly fixed numerous errors, removed unnecessary and vulnerable plugins, configured and improved the websites’ security, optimized the WP databases and made sure all the data was backing up properly. Dan was very professional, responsive and a pleasure to communicate with. I couldn’t be happier! Highly recommended! [#]

A colleague recommended Dan to help my organization with some website issues, and boy, am I glad she did! He understood the problem and noticed some other related problems that I didn’t even know existed. He fixed all of these issues within a day, at a very reasonable rate. He explained everything he did in clear terms, so that a neophyte like me could understand. A small nonprofit like ours needs someone like Dan to keep our online operations running smoothly. Highly recommended! [#]

NAMI Dane County is fortunate to have Dan as our photographer. He has covered our last four NAMIWalks, our Walk Kick-off Luncheons, NAMI Annual Awards Banquets, our NAMI Dane County 40th Anniversary Party and more. Dan not only takes fantastic photos, but he is very reliable, professional, and friendly. Dan is very committed to helping small nonprofits such as ours grow. We are grateful for his expertise. [#]

Madison Bikes is a local nonprofit, and we have relied on Dan’s services as a photographer. He shot several of our indoor events such as our Winter Bike Fashion Show, and his photos captured the energy and positivity in the room. Dan also took professional headshots of our board members for our website. And maybe most importantly, I knew I could always shoot Dan a quick email if we needed a photographer on short notice or if I had a question. This kind of commitment has been invaluable for our organization. [#]

Consulting & Tasks
Hourly consulting involves WordPress optimization and enhancement, hacked site triage and cleanup, or website assessment reports. Hourly tasks are piecemeal work such as installing WordPress themes or installing and configuring plugins. My hourly rate is $99/hour, and in the case of tasks that are less than half an hour, I will prorate the amount.
Projects include building new websites or significantly redeveloping existing sites. Describe your project to me. I’ll do an assessment and provide a quote. The website projects I typically work on run in the $1,500-$5,000 category.
